Charles Antoine Coypel was a member of a family of French painters. Noel Coypel(1628-1707) was its first great exponent. He was appointed court painter. Antoine was also a great painter in contact with Bernini.
Antoine Coypel(1661-1722) was the creator of the painting “Bacchus and Ariadne on the Island of Naxos”. Two examples are known, one of which is preserved in the “Philadelphia Museum of art” (USA), and the other in a Russian royal palace.
This painting, of extraordinary quality, could be a workshop replica, perhaps with the participation of Coypel himself.
It must be remembered that Charles Antoine Coypel (Paris 1694-1752) was also a pupil of his father Antoine.
Both Antoine and Charles Antoine held the title of first painter to the king of France.

The painting is in excellent conservation conditions. It is of excellent quality. The artist must have been of great stature.
The dimensions with the frame are 111.5cmx91.5cm, while without the frame the painting alone measures 98.5×78.5cm.

The story of Bacchus and Ariadne is expertly treated in the perfect composition, in the chiaroscuro, in the expressions and poses of the characters. The faces and hands, although not large in size, are rendered in detail.
The still life in the hands of the satyr is also interesting.
There are a thousand details exceptionally rendered by the master, which make it a work of extraordinary level.
The crackle is very thick and this is proof that we are talking about a work from the first half of the 1700s.
The frame is also from the 18th century and is in gold leaf.

The work is strongly influenced by the style that Madame De Pompadour liked and favored in the king’s court.

It is painted in oil on canvas. The canvas was relined in the mid-19th century
